A Competitor Analysis details the profiles of your competitors. This is performed using a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis to identify relative strengths and weaknesses.

SWOT Analysis

The important attributes of your competitors will depend on your business type, but will generally be one or more of the following:

  • market / finance / operational / r&d / hr
  • product quality / packaging / advertising / service
  • shareholders / inventory / financial resources
  • costs / productivity / technology

For each attribute, investigate their strengths and weaknesses. Compare these with your own strengths and weaknesses and consider any opportunities or threats that may exist. Populate the table below with your findings:



List the best opportunities you have discovered from this exercise and suggest how they could be used to your advantage.

List the worst threats you have discovered from this exercise and suggest how you might protect your business from these threats.

Perform a SWOT Analysis on your competitors for the relevant attributes. Consider what opportunities exist and how you might benefit. Protect your business from the possible threats you have discovered.
